New York Super Bedbugs

New York 300x250 New York Super Bedbugs

Visiting NY? You may need to be a bit more careful.

NY too now has bedbugs resistant to pesticides – including Deltamethrin – an important bedbug pesticide.

NY bedbugs are 264 time more Deltamethrin resistant than Florida bedbugs according to the Journal of Medical Entomology 45(6):1092-1101. 2008

Exterminators often use these insect neurotoxins for their effectiveness and “knock down” rates. Unfortunately, now they usually need to spray several times – not just once.

With bedbugs, direct contact with the spray is typically needed, the residue is less effective and bedbug eggs are much more resistant. By the time the eggs hatch, the pesticide is less toxic to the bedbugs and as a result re-spraying is needed to get the new bugs in their nymph or adult stage. Adult bedbugs hide as well and often avoid direct contact with the pesticide spray. Re-spraying encourages chemical resistance in bedbugs to develop. With world wide pest spraying – resistance has developed. With world wide travel, resistant bedbugs spread.

New York, Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angles have all seen outbreaks of more resistant bedbugs.

Non-pesticide control is becoming more urgent. Not dealing with bedbugs is expensive.

Diatomaceous earth blends are leading contenders in physical control without pesticides.

An interesting alternative.

(6) Box Spring

b. Check bottom of box spring for holes
c. Remove cover from bottom of box spring – bag, seal & discard
d. Spray any signs of infestation with 70% rubbing alcohol & let dry
e. Vacuum all edges, folds & interior of box spring
f. Apply Diatomaceous Earth to all folds, edges & interior – spread around with brush
g. Cover with box spring bag (twin and queen sized covers available in our store) – no bedbugs can get in or out

(7) Bed Frame
a. Check frame for spots, cracks, droppings & bedbug evidence
b. Spray & wipe all surfaces with 70% rubbing alcohol ( kills eggs) – let dry
c. Apply Diatomaceous Earth to any cracks ( where they hide) – brush in well
d. Apply Diatomaceous Earth in around each bed leg – spread in circle with brush

This treatment should make your bed a bedbug free oasis. Diatomaceous Earth will last up to 6 months. Re-apply around bedpost after each floor washing or vacuuming. You must maintain your oasis. Bedbugs are active at night. If you have them – they hide in cracks as small as your fingernail. They will be hiding as close to your bed as they can get. Don’t let your bedding touch the floor – especially while you sleep. They will climb up it. As long as they can’t get at you while you sleep – they will eventually move and look elsewhere for food.
