Bedbugs Making Big Comeback

propoxur 300x190 Bedbugs Making Big ComebackDecades after the widespread spraying of DDT was banned, bedbugs have made a big comeback.  In the USA, at least five states have called on the Department of Defense pleading for money to address the bedbug issue. The state of Ohio is so desperate that it petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to allow in-home use of a pesticide called Propoxur, which was banned out of concern for its effect on children. That request was denied, and the problem persists.

Nationwide exterminator Terminix reports that New York and Philadelphia have the most severe infestations and four cities in Ohio are landed on the top 15 list for bedbug infestations.

terminex 269x300 Bedbugs Making Big Comeback“80-90% of the phone calls we get every single day are related to bedbugs,” says Terminix.

Since 2006, the money spent eradicating bedbugs has more than doubled, topping $250 million dollars.  Bedbugs do not discriminate and bedbugs can be found in many high end hotels and apartment buildings.

Bedbugs have made a major resurgence because they’ve developed a resistance to most pesticides. Experts say there is an effective weapon – a chemical called Propoxur – that keeps killing for up to five weeks. The EPA says the chemical could be dangerous to children. The government recently said no more could be manufactured for use inside.

“As of a week and a half ago, I ordered the last 170 cases that my supplier was able to find,” says Alonso.

No state is tackling this plague as aggressively as Ohio. It’s even petitioned the EPA for permission to continue using the pesticide Propoxur indoors as its last best option. Even as they await approval, time and stores of the toxin are running out.

“The other options of newer technologies, newer chemicals that will come down the pike, those things will take a long time. We need short term solutions,” says Alonso.

Bedbugs can live up to a year. Each female can give birth to as many as 500. Alonso says unlike roaches or ants, these insects feast on you, which is why they settle on beds, couches, and recliners.

Columbus grandmother Delores Stewart has been fighting the pests for nearly a year. “I don’t want to go to bed. I don’t want them crawling all over me,” she says.

The EPA is standing firm on the ban of Propoxur indoors but offers these suggestions: seal cracks and crevices along baseboards; apply a dusting of diatomaceous earth to all public areas and bedbug prone zones; remove clutter; use a special mattress cover; dry clothing and sheets at high temperatures.

“Don’t let them get out of control because once you let them get out control you can’t handle them,” says Stewart.

Scientists say the perfect parasite never kills its host but as millions of Americans have found out, it can drive them crazy.

Bedbugs in Vancouver

Here is a great article written by CBC News about the spread of Bedbugs in Vancouver:

Bedbugs in Vancouver spread by landlord inaction: tenants

A Vancouver couple whose West End apartment building has been infested with bedbugs blames their Toronto-based landlord for making the problem worse.

“From the beginning, it was just handled terribly. They really took their time,” tenant Robin Spinell said. “Proper pest-control technique involves having no more than 10 to 14 days between treatment. That has probably happened maybe once or twice in the entire last year,” he added.

The Spinells are among hundreds of Vancouverites affected by an invasion of bedbugs in the prime but aging downtown neighbourhood. Until recently, the pests were more commonplace in the city’s transient, drug-infested Downtown Eastside.

“There are tenants all over the West End suffering,” Robin Spinell said. “It’s absolutely ridiculous by any stretch of the imagination that this kind of thing can happen in our so-called international city that is getting ready for the Olympics.”

Numerous Treatment Didn’t Work

Robin Spinell said the pests first appeared in the couple’s unit a year ago. He said he thinks they came from an adjacent suite where the tenant had frequent guests.

The couple said their landlord responded at first by treating only the suites where tenants had complained. Their unit was sprayed by exterminators 10 times in the last 11 months with limited success, they said, because after each spraying, new bedbugs would come in from other untreated areas of the building.

bedbug in vancouver 300x168 Bedbugs in Vancouver“The minute we got a notice of another spraying, I was in tears,” Susanne Spinell said. “I was so upset, thinking, ‘Oh my God, I have to move everything again.’ ”

With each spraying, tenants have to seal up their belongings in plastic bags and move around furniture.

The Spinells maintain that the exterminator hired by the landlord did a substandard job for a cut-rate price.

“The fact that we have been sprayed 10 times is a good indication of how ridiculous this has been,” Robin Spinell said.

CAP REIT acknowledged that several apartments in the building have been affected, but spokesperson Patricia MacPherson said the company is doing the best it can with a difficult situation.

Vancouver bedbugs in west end1 300x168 Bedbugs in Vancouver“Some tenants did not notify us [about their bedbugs] right away — but as soon as we did hear about issues in any of the suites, we did respond and arrange for treatment immediately,” MacPherson said.

Some tenants — unlike the Spinells — refused to allow exterminators in to their units, she said, while others didn’t have their suites properly prepared.

Landlord blames “uncooperative” tenants.

“The reason treatments aren’t successful is generally unco-operative tenants,” MacPherson said. “A lot of tenants were not co-operative at times, and we’ve had to spray their suites many, many, many times, and they are still being unco-operative in terms of prepping.”

Bedbug building landlord1 300x168 Bedbugs in VancouverThe Spinells have had numerous sleepless nights since the infestation began and have become obsessed over bedbugs, they said.

“Ten months of continuous stress,” Robin Spinell said. “They’re running around in your bed, in your frame, and you can see them, you can feel them. They are filling up with your blood.”

The pests are now endemic in Vancouver’s West End, according to a website called the Bedbug Registry. Users have registered 148 recent complaints about bedbugs in dozens of buildings in the small, high-density, high-rent area — considered some of Vancouver’s prime real estate with stunning views.

“You wake up at night, and even though there might be not a bug, you just feel the sensation of something is crawling on you,” Susanne Spinell said.

Domenic Losito, regional director of health protection for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, said the bedbugs are being allowed to flourish by landlords who cut corners and tenants who refuse to co-operate with treatments. In these cases, he said, tenants’ rights — to refuse landlords entry, for example — are working against their best interests.

“The bedbug problem cries out for more frequent inspections by the landlord and more co-operation by the tenants for prepping, allowing someone in to do the treatment. And it seems to be going the opposite direction,” Losito said.

Olympics will bring more bugs: health authority

vancouver bedbug Bedbugs in VancouverLosito predicts that unchecked, the problem will only get worse in 2010 because of the number of visitors during the Olympics — visitors who could bring more bugs or spread the ones that are already there. Health authorities can’t take enforcement action because the critters don’t spread disease, so they’re not considered a public health hazard, he said.

“We’ve got a problem here without a ready solution in legislation,” Losito said.

The stigma of acknowledging that one’s home has become infested means not enough people are talking about how prevalent the bugs have become, particularly in more established neighborhoods, he added.

“Most people wouldn’t want to scream it out at the office that ‘I’ve got a bedbug problem!’ ” Losito said.

“People are scared to tell that they are having bedbugs, and then they just move and carry the problem with them,” Susanne Spinell said.

“It’s just increasingly getting worse,” her husband said. “Really, the politicians, they have to do something about it or it will explode next year when the Olympics come.”

Bedbugs Found in Movie Theater

bedbugs in new york Bedbugs Found in Movie TheaterNew York (CNN) — A 25-screen movie theater in New York’s bustling Times Square is the latest city business to shut down temporarily as it battles a bedbug infestation.

The AMC Empire 25 movie theater closed Tuesday night for extermination and reopened Wednesday. According to an AMC spokesman, the closure was part of a two-week follow-up treatment after bedbugs were detected on theater seats in early August.

“Based on our pest control specialists’ recommendation, we retreat theaters two weeks after their initial treatment. In the case of our Empire 25 theater, the two-week follow-up treatment occurred last night, August 17,” AMC Entertainment spokesperson Justin Scott said. “Unfortunately, a guest reported bedbug bites at Empire 25 this past weekend, so we quickly reinspected the auditorium in question and, upon finding bedbugs in that auditorium, we immediately closed it until it received treatment last night.”

The bloodsucking pests were found at another New York AMC location, the Magic Johnson Harlem 9, on July 30. The theater was treated by pest control specialists before being reopened, Scott said.

Reports of bedbugs in New York City have been mounting, with sightings not only in apartment buildings, but also in commercial retail facilities and offices around the city. Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria’s Secret stores, as well as the Time Warner Center, home of CNN’s New York offices, are just a few of the locations that have reported treating for bedbugs.

“Bedbug Pandemic” Possible Group Warns

CBC news posted a great article warning about a possible bedbug pandemic and its implications for Canada. To read the full article, visit CBC News. Thanks CBC for the great reporting!

“Bedbug pandemic” possible, group warns
By CBC News, Wed Aug 4 2010
large bedbug 300x225 Bedbug Pandemic Possible Group WarnsAn international survey of pest control companies suggests the world is on the verge of a “bedbug pandemic,” says the U.S. National Pest Management Association.

The survey of nearly 1,000 companies, conducted by the University of Kentucky and released last week, found they have experienced an 81 per cent increase in bedbug calls since 2000.

“The results of the 2010 Comprehensive Global Bed Bug Study suggest that we are on the threshold of a bedbug pandemic, not just in the United States, but around the world,” Missy Henriksen, vice-president of public affairs for NPMA, said in a news release.

Several factors are combining to allow the spread of bedbugs. People are travelling more, and the insects tend to hitch a ride on clothing and in suitcases, creating a worldwide distribution network. In addition, many of the pesticides previously used to control them are no longer effective.

“The insecticides that used to be used before, they were fairly toxic and they’re off the market now,” said Christine Noronha, an entomologist with Agriculture Canada.

bedbug closeup 300x298 Bedbug Pandemic Possible Group Warns“So you can’t use that, and they have developed a resistance to a lot of those insecticides anyway.”

Because of their tendency to travel, bedbugs are a particular headache for hotel operators. Most operators these days put their housekeeping staff through specialized training to spot them.

“There seems to be an intensity of bedbugs in hotels,” said Walter VanBeek, president of the Hotel Association of P.E.I.

“Bedbugs can come in on luggage, and once they come into the hotel, they may make this their home.”
Planes, dorms and movie theatres

It is not just a hotel problem. The survey results show domestic cases topped the list for pest control companies, with close to 90 per cent of companies reporting they had treated cases in private homes. College dormitories, public transit and movie theatres were also on the list of bedbug habitats.

Charlottetown exterminator David Herring said he’s seen the signs of the growing problem.

“When I first started we didn’t see that many, a few calls a year,” said Herring.

“I’ve probably done 15, maybe even 20 jobs this year so far.”

Herring said getting rid of bedbugs is a long process. It generally involves two or three trips to a home to spray and steam, and costs hundreds of dollars.

bedbugbitestomach 300x205 Bedbug Pandemic Possible Group Warns“It’s a major endeavour to go through the process and get rid of them completely,” he said.

“Usually from start to finish, you could be talking a couple months.”

Stopping bedbugs from entering your home can be difficult. The best you can do is act quickly once you suspect they’re there, before they multiply and create an even bigger problem.

Using Diatomaceous Earth After Spraying for Bedbugs

DSCN6623 224x300 Using Diatomaceous Earth After Spraying for Bedbugs

Lasts 6 months

Are you planning on having your home sprayed for bedbugs? Pesticides only work a short time and any bedbugs that are hiding may be missed.

A good second line of defense is special diatomaceous earth based mix DE-10. Put a little around your bed legs and mattresses – a little goes a long way and kills bedbugs for up to 6 months.

You have endured chemical exposure to a mixture of materials that are toxic to bedbugs. Usually it has been sprayed around your living and sleeping areas. Generally these sprays are effective for local bedbug populations for contact killing. The residues have been found to be less and less effective. So you may not be able to count on one application to get rid of your problem. Plan on more sprays being done as bed bugs hide during spraying and eggs are resistant and hatch after spraying.

Diatomaceous earth has the advantages of being edible, non-toxic, effective and long lasting. One application can last 6 months – long enough to get any new bedbugs. It works by scratching the bedbug’s shell and they dry out and die – usually with 24 hours. It can also protect your luggage when traveling – avoids bringing bedbugs home.

Because it is a physical control, bedbugs don’t develop resistance to it. You don’t have to worry about adverse chemical effects on your family’ s long term health.

It is an ideal alternative to repeated spraying. Please check the videos out for how to apply it. Contact us for any questions. Our consultations are free.
