Here are some more Do-It-Yourself Tricks to try before you calling an exterminator or to use in conjunction with exterminator services:
-Take apart bed frame (if possible) and thoroughly wash, vacuum and clean all surfaces. When dry, dust with diatomaceous earth before reassembling
-Vacuum mattresses and pay extra attention to the mattress seams. Seal mattresses in plastic mattress bags and sprinkle the inside of the mattress bags with a little preventative diatomaceous earth.
-Wash or dry-clean bedding (fold bedding in on itself to contain the bedbugs) and all affected items of clothing. Use hot water and dry on the hottest setting possible.
-Clear the room all clutter. Check clocks, pictures, books, magazines, lamps, ornaments etc for bedbugs. Where possible, steam clean or disinfect with rubbing alcohol all items.
-Steam clean all carpets and rugs.
-Steam clean all baseboards, baseboard heaters and radiators, outlets, behind light switch plates, and any wall cracks or seams. Apply a fine dusting of diatomaceous powder using a paint brush – this will provide protection for 6 months or until it is wiped, mopped or vacuumed up.
-Purchase caulk and a caulking gun at a local hardware store and fill any wall and wood cracks
-Vacuum all floors, curtains, furniture, and the mattress and box spring of the bed. Do this daily or as often as possible. Ensure that the vacuum bag is disposed of immediately.
-Fill four plastic containers (recycled yogurt, cottage cheese,or sour cream containers work nicely) with a couple tablespoons of diatomaceous earth and place the bottom of each bed frame leg inside one of the containers
Let the bedbug slaughter begin!
